Reserved forests were protected by the British crown in British India but did not have related suzerainty, according to the Indian Forest Act of 1878, passed during the British Raj. These perpetual estates of forests are kept in reasonable condition to provide wood and other forest products. The Indian government continued to preserve and protect particular forests after the country gained independence and added protection to other woods. Reserved and protected forests are established by their respective state governments, unlike National Parks or animal sanctuaries. Unless specifically ordered, all activities, including hunting, grazing, etc., are prohibited in designated woods.
