After 1993, Belgium shifted from a unitary to a federal form of government.
Reducing the power of the Central Government and giving these powers to the regional governments was one of the major amendments made to the Belgian Constitution. Belgium had regional governments much earlier. They each had their own responsibilities and authority. However, the Central Government had the ability to revoke all of these powers that had been granted to regional governments. In 1993, there was a change in that the regional governments received constitutional authority that was independent of the federal government. Belgium changed from a unitary to a federal system of government as a result.
