Detailed Solution

After 28 years of imprisonment, Nelson Mandela walked out of jail as a free man.
South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela served as the country's first president after gaining independence. He opposed the apartheid regime and organised protests and battles to have it overthrown. Any anti-apartheid movement was viewed as treason by the white government, which promoted the apartheid regime. Nelson Mandela was therefore charged with treason and given a life sentence. After serving 28 years in prison, he was released in 1994 when South Africa gained independence. As South Africa's president, he prepared the path for a multiracial administration centred on the idea of equality for men and women of all races.
