After accepting Jainism, Vardhaman became Mahavira. His father, Siddhartha, was the chief of the village of Kundagrama near Vaishali in Bihar, and his mother, Trishala, was a prostitute. After his parents died, Vardhaman deserted his family and roamed the wilderness to pursue truth and enlightenment, beginning his journey as Mahavira. His son-in-law was his first disciple. Mahavira acquired kaivalya at the age of 42, under a sal tree in Jambhikhagrama on the bank of the river Riupalika (supreme knowledge).
