Detailed Solution

After allowing a discount of 5%, a sales tax of 5% is charged on a book that is marked Rs.200. Then the total amount paid is Rs.199.5.
It is given that the marked price of a book is Rs.200 after allowing a discount of 5%.
Therefore use the formula,
Discount = Discount % of Marked price
  Discount=5% of 200 Discount= 5 100 ×200 Discount=5×2 Discount=Rs.10   That means the discount on the book is Rs.10.
We know that,
Discount = Marked price - Selling price   Therefore, the selling price of the book = Rs.190.  It is given that 5% is the sales tax on the sales amount of Rs.190, Therefore, we will get,  Sales tax= Tax % of Sales amount Sales tax= 5% of 190 Sales tax= 5 100 ×190 Sales tax= 1 20 ×190 Sales tax=Rs.9.5   That means the sales tax on the book is Rs.9.5.
Therefore, the total amount paid = 9.5 + 190 =Rs.199.5.
