After gaining power, the Samanthas declared themselves as Maha-Samanthas. Big landlords or warrior chiefs were more prevalent and well-known in various parts of the subcontinent with the arrival of the various dynasties in the seventh century. They became known as the semantics because the monarchs or rulers of these areas recognised them as their subordinates. These semantics were required to carry gifts for their rulers and to regularly attend the courts to help anyone who needed military assistance. The Samanthas eventually started referring to themselves as the "great lords of a circle or territory" or the "maha-samantas" as their riches and power increased through time.
