Detailed Solution

After harvest, the indigo plant was taken to the Vats (a fermenting or storage vessel) in the indigo factory.
The indigo villages were generally around indigo factories owned by planters. It required three or four vats to make the dye. Each vat served a distinct purpose. The leaves of the indigo plant were soaked in warm water in a vat known as the fermenting or steeper vat for a few hours. The liquid began to heat up and bubble as the plants fermented. The rotten leaves were removed, and the liquid was drained into a second vat placed just beneath the first.
