After independence, the Indian government put restrictions on foreign trade under the pretext of protecting domestic industry. This means that restrictions on foreign trade were maintained by the government and policies. India is a member of WTO so we can't have any trade restrictions based on "domestic industry protection".In 1947, the newly independent India set up quite a few trade restrictions and imposed quantitative restrictions on imports. With its newfound political independence, India's policymakers also sought to restrict foreign trade as much as possible.
