Detailed Solution

After indigo production collapsed in Bengal, the planters shifted their operation to Bihar. Bengal's indigo production stopped after the rebellion in the 1850s. However, the planters had now relocated their business to Bihar. The development of synthetic dyes badly impacted their business in the late nineteenth century, but they still managed to increase production. A Bihari peasant convinced Mahatma Gandhi to travel to Champaran after his return from South Africa so he could witness the hardship of the indigo farmers there. The Champaran campaign against the indigo planters was launched after Mahatma Gandhi's visit in 1917.
