After Sri Lanka obtained Independence in the year 1948, it adopted a series of measures that gave unfair privileges to the Sinhalas.
Since the majority of Sri Lankans speak Sinhala, they quickly consolidated their political power once the nation became independent and democratic in 1948. The democratically elected administration had undertaken a number of different majoritarian policies. The democratically elected government had adopted a series of various majoritarian measures. In 1956, the government passed an act recognising Sinhala as the official language disregarding Tamils. It resulted in a preference for Sinhala speakers in government employment and educational possibilities, which infuriated Tamil speakers. They were successful in establishing Sinhala supremacy as a result of their political hegemony.
