Detailed Solution

After the death of Ranjit Singh in 1839, the Sikhs were defeated in the two Anglo-Sikh Wars and Punjab was annexed by Lord Dalhousie.
Punjab was a kingdom present in the Northwestern part of India. It was under the rule of Sikhs. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was the ruler of Punjab. He died in the year 1839. After the death of  Ranjit Singh, Punjab experienced factionalism and court politics due to weak successors. The Company, initially, did not interfere in the affairs of Punjab. But the fear of Russia made the Company secure its front. They feared that Russia might expand itself and enter India from the northwest. So, the company wanted to bring Punjab under its control. The company fought two Anglo-Sikh wars for control of Punjab. It was annexed in the year 1849 by Lord Dalhousie as Governor-General of India.
