The reaction is,

The desilverization of argentiferous lead (PbS + 0.01 to 1% Ag) is done using Parke's method. It is based on the distribution principle, in which a two-phase system is formed by molten zinc and molten lead. Compared to molten lead, molten zinc has a higher solubility for silver.

The Zn-Ag alloy freezes quickly and is lighter than Pb. So it creates the higher layer (X). It is simple to separate the floating, solidified Zn-Ag alloy from molten Pb.

Small levels of Ag are present in Pb in the bottom layer (Y).

Zinc is extracted by distillation from the Zn-Ag alloy.
