It assumed control over the nine air transport organisations in August 1953. The nationalisation of airlines happened under the Air Corporations Act. The parliament voted to nationalise nine airlines. These were Air India Ltd, Bharat Airways Ltd, Airways (India) Ltd, Indian National Airways Ltd., Deccan Airways Ltd, Air Services of India Ltd, Himalayan Aviation Ltd, Kalinga Airlines, and Air India International Ltd — and supplanted them with Indian Airlines and Air India International.
