Akbar was 13 years old when he became emperor. The third Mughal emperor, Akbar reigned from 1556 to 1605. After Humayun, Akbar succeeded him under a regent, Bairam Khan. Bairam Khan helped the young emperor in expanding and consolidating the Mughal domains in India. A successful general and a strong personality, Akbar gradually enhanced the Mughal empire to include much of the Indian subcontinent. His influence and power extended over the whole subcontinent because of Mughal political, military, cultural, and economic dominance. During the reign of Akbar, the Mughal empire tripled in size and wealth. He formulated a powerful military system and instituted effective political and social reforms.
