Alluri Sitaram Raju was executed in 1924. A violent guerrilla movement grew in the Gudem Hills, led by an intriguing individual. Alluri Sitaram Raju, the tribal leader, asserted that he had a range of superhuman abilities. Raju had the tribal rebels spellbound, declaring that he was an incarnation of God. He argued that aggression, not nonviolence, was required to liberate India. The Gudem rebels waged guerilla warfare, attacked police stations, and made murderous attempts on British officials to obtain swaraj. Raju was apprehended, put to death in  1924 and eventually became a household name.
