Detailed Solution

Along with his wife, Bahadur Shah Zafar was sent to Rangoon jail by the British. After being found guilty of multiple charges stemming from his participation in the Indian Mutiny/Revolt of 1857, the British deported him to Rangoon in British-controlled Burma in 1858. The rebels and the sepoys marched to Delhi in May 1857 and proclaimed Bahadur Shah Zafar as the leader of the Revolt of 1857, which he unwillingly had to accept. He sent letters to all the chiefs and authorities in the nation urging them to unite and form an alliance of Indian states to fight the British. This one action had far-reaching effects as he was later deported.
