Alvars and Nayanars used Sangam literature to draw upon their ideals.
Alvars (devoted to Vishnu) and Nayanars (Shiva devotees) are the two strands of religious movements that emerged during the seventh and ninth centuries.
They used Sangam literature, one of the oldest in the Tamil language, to draw upon ideals of love and heroism. They blended these ideals with the values of Bhakti tradition. Alvars and Nayanars consisted of all castes, including those considered ‘ ‘untouchables' ' like- Pulaiyars and the Panars. They criticised the Buddhists and the Jainas and preached the intense love of Shiva or Vishnu as the path to salvation. They were poet-saints and used poems to preach and praise God.
