'Amar Jiban' was written by Rashsundari Devi. Rashsundari Devi (1800–1890) penned her memoirs in Bangla at age 60. Amar Jiban is the first known autobiography by an Indian woman. Devi was a wealthy landowner's daughter who worked as a homemaker. In those days, it was thought that if a woman learned to read and write, she would curse her husband and leave him dead. Even so, long after her marriage, she taught herself how to read and write. Her life experiences are detailed at great length in this book. The book showcased her thirst for knowledge, something absent in the past women.
