Detailed Solution

Amir Khusrau, a fourteenth-century poet, used the term "Hind." While the concept of a geographical and cultural entity such as "India" existed, the time "Hindustan" did not have the political and national connotations we associate with it today. Therefore, historians must exercise caution when using terms that mean different things in the past. Consider a simple phrase such as "foreigner." It is now used to refer to someone who is not an Indian. A "foreigner" in the mediaeval period was any stranger who appeared in a given village or was not a member of that society or culture. (Such a person may be referred to as a paradise in Hindi or an ajnabi in Persian.) For example, a city dweller might have considered a forest dweller a foreigner. Still, two peasants living in the same village were not strangers to one another, even though they might have come from different castes or religions.
