Amniocentesis is used to check for genetic disorders and determine the survivability of the foetus. It is a medical procedure in which a small sample of amniotic fluid is removed from the uterus for testing. The amniotic fluid surrounds the baby in the uterus during pregnancy and contains cells shed by the baby. Amniocentesis is usually performed to diagnose genetic disorders (e.g., down syndrome, haemoplilia, sickle-cell anaemia), structural defects (spina bifida) or inherited metabolic disorders like phenylketonuria.
