Amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic test in which a small sample of the amniotic fluid surrounding the foetus is removed and analysed. The test can be used to check for chromosomal abnormalities and other genetic disorders in the foetus, such as Down syndrome, haemophilia, sickle cell anaemia, spina bifida, and cystic fibrosis. However, it is not typically used to detect heart disease or other structural abnormalities of the foetal heart. Other tests, such as ultrasound, may be used to evaluate the foetal heart and detect any abnormalities.
