With the help of heat and pressure, the original organic material is converted into a fuel such as oil or gas. Non-renewable resources include earth minerals and metal ores, fossil fuels (such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas), nuclear fuels, and groundwater in certain aquifers. Natural resources such as coal, petroleum (crude oil), and natural gas take thousands of years to form naturally and cannot be replaced at the rate at which they are depleted. It is expected that, eventually, fossil-based resources will become too expensive to harvest, forcing humanity to rely on alternative energy sources.
