We know,

Where G is the universal gravitation constant, M is the mass of the planet and R is the radius of the planet.
 

Since the shape of the earth is not perfectly spherical, its radius is not the same everywhere. Hence the value of g is also not perfectly the same at all the places on the surface of the earth. The earth is a little flat at the poles, therefore the radius at the poles is less than the radius at the equator. Therefore, since g is inversely proportional to the radius, we can say that the g is greater at the poles than at the equator.
