In Sri Lanka, majoritarianism led the country towards a civil war. Due to the government's bias toward the majority community, the minority was left with no choice but to revolt.
The Sinhala-dominated government preferred the majority Sinhala community over any other group. Most of the Sinhala-speaking citizens in Sri Lanka follow Buddhism as their religion. Thus, the government introduced a policy according to which the constitution of Sri Lanka protected Buddhism as the official religion. The government also recognised Sinhala as the only official language and reserved positions in university and government jobs for Sinhala applicants. As a result, the Sri Lankan Tamils initiated movements and parties to encourage the Tamil language as an official language of Sri Lanka. They wanted regional autonomy and equality of opportunity in the job and education sector. However, these demands were turned down by the government.
This political war between the communities soon turned into a massive conflict. This widespread conflict turned into a Civil War.
