Amrita Devi Bishnoi was an Indian environmentalist who dedicated her life to the preservation of sacred Khejri trees in her community. She and 363 other Bishnois were killed in 1730 after protesting against the king's soldiers cutting down trees. This event, known as the Khejarli massacre, sparked a tree-protection movement and resulted in laws protecting forests and wildlife in India.
In her honour, the Government of India established the Amrita Devi Bishnoi National Grant for wildlife conservation.
