Detailed Solution

An Act was passed to recognise Sinhala as the only official language of Sri Lanka and establish a new constitution. However, as a result, the relationship between the Sinhala-speaking and Tamil-speaking communities was not only strained but also the Sri Lankan Tamils launched parties and struggled for the recognition of Tamil as an official language as well. The distrust between the communities resulted in a massive uprising and conflicts, which later turned into a civil war, killing thousands of people from both sides.
