Detailed Solution

A subsistence crisis is an extreme situation where basic livelihood means are endangered.
By 1789, 28 million people were living in France, an increase from 23 million in 1715. Thus the demand for food grains subsequently increased dramatically. However, the amount of grain produced could not keep up with demand. As a result, bread, the majority's primary food, increased in price. Though most employees were labourers in workshops, their wages did not rise at the same rate as prices. The difference between the rich and the poor widened as a result. Things deteriorated when drought or hail reduced the yield leading to a food crisis, which was typical in Old French history.
