An inflorescence with younger flowers at the base and the older ones at its apex is known as cymose. This arrangement is called basipetal arrangement of flower. In cymose type of inflorescence, the main axis
terminates in a flower. Hence it is limited in growth.
(1) In head or capitulum, the peduncle is flattened to form a receptacle. Unisexual and bisexual sessile flowers,
called florets, develop centripetally on receptacle. The inflorescence is surrounded by involucre.
(2) In racemose type of inflorescences, the main axis continues to grow and the flowers are borne laterally in an acropetal succession.
(4) In hypanthium, peduncle is modified into a deep, fleshy, cup-like structure. Many sessile unisexual flowers are arranged irregularly. Male flowers are near the opening and female flowers are at the bottom. Sterile female fl Powers are found between male and female flowers. These are called gall flowers.
