Detailed Solution

An ion M2+ contains 10 electrons. The atomic number of element M is 12.
Neutral atoms are the atoms which contain the same number of protons and electrons in it. When the atom loses electrons, it forms cations. In the given metal M, 10 electrons are retained by losing two electrons. Hence the original electron number is (10+2) = 12 which is also the atomic number of M. The given element M must be magnesium.
