Let  v be the velocity of sound and  v be the frequency of the note. Thus the wavelength of sound produced is  λ=vv
The wavelength of first overtone of organ pipe is
λ1=l+2e=40+2e         vv=40+2e      (  λ1=λ)
The wavelength of first overtone  of close pipe is
34λ1=l+e=3l+e          34(vv)=3l+e      (  λ1=λ)
By eliminating vv  from the above two equations, we get
34(40+2e)=3l+e          120+6e=3l+e       e=2cm
