Anantavarman belonged to the Ganga Dynasty, an important dynasty in the region of Orissa.
It ruled from the 12th century and is known for developing the Kalinga architectural features of the time. Anantavarman is also important for his contributions to constructing the famous Jagannatha temple in Puri. The Puri Jagannath temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This Temple can be the best example of growing the regional cultures around the religious traditions as the cult of Jagannatha is being developed around the main religion of Hinduism. It is said that the tribal people of Orissa make the wooden image of deities.
