Another name for monasteries is Viharas. Buddhist and Jain monks and nuns practise their religions in the monastery. Viharas is another term for monasteries. Monasteries used to be constructed of wood. Wealthy merchants donated most of the land on which monasteries were constructed. People cannot travel to preach during the rainy season because of the shelter issue. Men and women who built temporary shelters in the gardens or caves in hilly locations were with Buddha and Mahavira's teams of followers. The long-term abodes were known as "Monasteries" or "Viharas." Brick and wood were used to construct the viharas.
