Germany fought the First World War alongside the Austrian empire and against the Allies (Russia, France, and England). Once the US entry strengthened the Allies, they won in 1918, thus defeating the Central Powers, including Germany. The abdication of the emperor and the defeat of Imperial Germany brought parliamentary parties to the forefront and enabled them to recast German polity. A National Assembly established a democratic constitution at Weimer and elected deputies to the Reichstag or German Parliament based on universal votes cast by adults, including women. The Germans were, however, far from satisfied with this republic because they were forced to accept specific terms set forth by the peace treaty at Versailles after Germany lost in the First World War.
