Akashvani is another name for All India Radio.
The Indian public broadcaster Prasar Bharati, with its headquarters in New Delhi, was set up in 1997 with Doordarshan, the television network, and All India Radio as its units. Earlier, the television and radio networks were subunits of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The All India Radio, established in 1927, is the largest radio and broadcasting network covering more than 90% of the country’s area. Since 1957, it has been known as Akashvani, meaning Voice from the Sky. Vividh Bharati, or the Commercial Broadcasting Service, is a service of Akashvani popular in cities like Mumbai. Short films, news, music, comedy, and many more services are included in it.
