Q.
Answer the questions on the basis of the information given below.
Six teams - A, B, C, D, E and F participated in a hockey tournament. The tournament had five rounds and in each round of the tournament, each team played exactly one match with one of the other teams. In the first three rounds, each team played with three different teams. In any match, for any team, 3 points were awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw and zero points for a loss. The following table gives partial information about the total number of goals scored (Goals for), the number of goals conceded (Goats Against), the number of matches won, drawn and lost and total number of points obtained by each of the six teams at the end of the first three rounds.
In any match, no team scored more than four goals. In any match, the difference between the number of goals scored and the number of goals conceded by any team is at most two. No match ended goalless, i.e, with neither team scoring any goals.
Team | Goals for | Goals against | Won | Drawn | Lost | Points |
A | 11 | 5 | ||||
B | 9 | 9 | ||||
C | 5 | 7 | ||||
D | 1 | 4 | 1 | |||
E | 7 | 7 | 4 | |||
F | 4 | 3 |
Further, the following additional information is known:
(i) In the first round, A played against B.
(ii) In the second round, B won a match against C with a goal difference of 2
(iii) In the third round, C won a match in which the total number of goals scored is 2.

Key Points from the Problem Statement
- General Rules:
- Each team plays one match per round.
- In any match:
- No team scored more than 4 goals.
- The difference between goals scored and goals conceded is at most 2.
- No match ended goalless.
- Known Results (Table):
- Team A: Scored 11 goals, conceded 5.
- Team B: Scored 9 goals, conceded 9.
- Team C: Scored 5 goals, conceded 7.
- Team D: Scored 1 goal, conceded 4, won 1 match.
- Team E: Scored 7 goals, conceded 7, lost 4 matches.
- Team F: Scored 4 goals, with 3 points.
- Additional Information:
- Round 1: Team A played against Team B.
- Round 2: Team B defeated Team C with a goal difference of 2.
- Round 3: Team C won a match in which the total goals scored were 2.
- Total points:
- Win: 3 points.
- Draw: 1 point.
- Loss: 0 points.
- Objective: Identify who played against Team D in the first round.
Step-by-Step Deduction
1. Team D's Match Results:
Goals For: 1, Goals Against: 4.
Total goal difference = 1 - 4 = -3. Team D has won 1 match, meaning its only win must have had at least 1 goal difference. Since Team D conceded 4 goals total, the match they won must have been low-scoring for their opponent.
2. Analyze Round 1:
Team A vs. Team B in Round 1. Other teams (C, D, E, F) must play against each other:
- Possibilities: D could have played against C, E, or F.
3. Check Team E's Results:
Team E scored 7 goals, conceded 7 goals, and lost all 3 matches in the first three rounds. This implies Team E did not play against D in Round 1 because D won 1 match, and E could not have been the loser.
4. Check Team F's Results:
Team F scored 4 goals and has 3 points, meaning they won 1 match and lost 2. If D played against F in Round 1, F would have lost, and D would have won. However, D scored only 1 goal in total, and Team F scored 4 goals overall, which makes this unlikely.
5. Check Team C's Results:
Team C scored 5 goals, conceded 7 goals, and lost to B in Round 2 with a 2-goal difference. Team D's single win (scoring 1 goal) is most consistent with playing against C in Round 1: D scored 1 goal, and C lost with at least 1 goal conceded.
Final Thought:
Team C played against Team D in the first round.
