Detailed Solution

The planet has experienced five previous mass extinctions, the last extinction, occurring around 65 million years ago, killed all the dinosaurs from existence. It is believed that we are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction.

The Holocene extinction is referred to as the sixth mass extinction or Anthropogenic extinction. It is an ongoing extinction event of species during the present epoch (Holocene epoch) as a result of human activity. Anthropogenic extinction is defined as being caused by the intentional and non malicious activities of humans. Such processes include overexploitation of resources, pollution, introduction of invasive species, diseases, and habitat destruction.
