There are two types of polio vaccine:

Inactivated polio vaccine (IPV): This vaccine contains killed poliovirus. It is administered through injections. This was first developed by Jonas Salk.

Oral polio vaccine (OPV): This vaccine contains live, attenuated (weakened) forms of the poliovirus. It is administered orally (polio drops). This was first developed by Albert Sabin.

Polio drops that are administered into the body contain attenuated pathogens, which are weakened forms of the poliovirus. Attenuated pathogens are capable of replicating in the host body, but they are not virulent enough to cause disease. When these weakened pathogens are introduced into the body, the immune
system recognises and responds to them, producing an immune response that provides protection against future infection with the wild-type poliovirus.

Antivenom injection contains preformed antibodies that have been harvested from the serum of an animal that has been immunised with venom. These preformed antibodies are specific to the venom and can neutralise its toxic effects. Antivenom is used to treat venomous snake bites, scorpion stings and other venomous animal
bites.

(1) Gamma globulins are antibodies, which are not the specific components of polio drops.

(3) Vaccines do not contain active pathogens because virulent form of the pathogen can cause disease. Instead, vaccines contain a modified or weakened form of the pathogen that is capable of stimulating an immune response without causing disease.

(4) Harvested antibodies are used to create antivenom, but not to create polio drops.
