Given, a rectangle whose shaded area is to be calculated.
Here, we have to determine the area as indicated by the shaded region.
So, it can be observed that the shaded portion forms a trapezoid with parallel sides of lengths 3 cm and 1 cm respectively and the base of length 5cm.
Now, we know that the area of a trapezoid is the product of half of its sum of parallel sides and the base.
So, using this, we have the area of the shaded region will be the difference in the area of the rectangle and that of the unshaded trapezoid.
So, we have the required area as follows,

= (5 × 4) − 12 1 + 3 × 5 = 20 − 10 = 10 cm 2

So, the area of the shaded part is obtained as 10

cm 2

.
