Detailed Solution

Arikamedu was a prominent trade centre between 2200 and 1900 years ago.
It was located in the southern part of Puducherry, on the right side of the Ariyankuppam river. It was an important harbour in the early Roman era. The three main ethnic groups inhabited this area were Romans, Cholas, and French. There is evidence for this. It was an important port between the first and second centuries BC. Initially, it was a fishing village, but as trade grew, the community became a port town. Arikamedu conducted inland trade with Alagankulam, Kaveripattinam, Musiri, and other cities.
