Gandhi gave the idea of satyagraha which stated that if the cause was just and the struggle was against injustice, then physical force was not needed in the fight against the oppressor. One of these satyagraha movements was seen in Champaran in Bihar. Gandhi visited the place in 1916, where he inspired the peasant to fight and stand up against the oppressive plantation system.

The Rowlatt Act (1919), which the Imperial Legislative Council passed in February of 1919, gave the British government the power to repress political activities.

One of the most prominent Dalit leaders Dr B.R.Ambedkar, organised the Dalits, also called the untouchables, into the Depressed Class Association in the year 1930.

The Poona Pact was signed in 1932. It gave reserved seats to the depressed classes(Dalits) in provincial and legislative councils.
