The war pitted the Allies—primarily France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, starting in 1917, the United States—against the Central Powers, mainly Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey. It ended with the defeat of the coalition. Concerning the death, destruction, and carnage it brought about, the war was essentially unprecedented.
