In the 1430s, Johann Gutenberg invented the first printing press. The Bible was the first book he printed. A total of 180 copies were published over three years.

In 1517, the religious reformer Martin Luther published his Ninety-Five Theses, which criticized many Roman Catholic Church practices and ceremonies. This was posted on the door of a church in Wittenberg. The Church was challenged to discuss his ideas.

In 1579, Catholic priests in Cochin printed the first Tamil book.
