In the 1430s, Johann Gutenberg, who belonged to Germany (Strasbourg), developed the first printing press, which started producing low-quality text printing, which cost less.
In 1517, a religious reformer, Martin Luther, printed his ‘Ninety-Five Theses’.
In 1558, the Roman Catholic Church started to organise and maintain the Index of Prohibited Books in the Church. The Vernacular Press Act was imposed in 1878 by Lord Lytton, the Viceroy of India. He banned all the newspapers in India except in the English language.
