In 1848, the French artist Frdric Sorrieu created a series of four prints that visualised the dreams of the world he called the democratic and social republic. The first prints in the series show European and American people, men and women of all ages and life, marching in long lines and passing in honour of the Statue of Liberty. As you know, artists at the time of the French Revolution embodied freedom as female figures. Here you can see the enlightened torch she holds in one hand and the Charter of Human Rights in the other. On the ground in the photo's foreground is the scattered wreckage of the symbol of the absolutist institution. In Serious' utopian vision, the world's people are grouped as separate nations identified by flags and folk costumes.
