When zinc is added to sodium hydroxide solution, sodium zincate (𝑁𝑎 ) is 2 𝑍𝑛𝑂2 formed along with hydrogen gas.

 2𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻 + 𝑍𝑛 → 𝑁𝑎 2 𝑍𝑛𝑂2 + 𝐻 2

 When the burning splint is kept near the evolved gas, it continues burning with a pop sound, indicating the evolution of hydrogen gas. When the same metal, 𝑍𝑛, reacts with strong acid 𝐻2SO4 to give  ZnSO4, hydrogen gas has evolved.

 𝑍𝑛 + 𝐻 2 𝑆𝑂 4 → 𝑍𝑛𝑆𝑂 4 + 𝐻 2
