Arya Samaj was founded by Swami Dayanand Saraswati in 1875.
The campaign favouring widow remarriage began to take hold in various regions of the nation by the second half of the nineteenth century. Veerasalingam Pantulu established an organisation for widow remarriage in the Telugu-speaking areas of the Madras Presidency. Young reformers and thinkers in Bombay committed to embracing the exact cause simultaneously. Widow remarriage was supported by Swami Dayanand Saraswati, who founded the reform organisation Arya Samaj in the north and supported widow remarriage. However, only a small percentage of widows remarried. Further, because widow remarriage was not socially accepted, conservative organisations fought the new law.
