Detailed Solution

As the cotton supplies from America were cut down during the Civil War, Britain turned towards India.
The American civil war occurred in 1860. America was an exporter of raw cotton utilised by British industries to produce manufactured cloth. The supply of cotton was affected due to the civil war. So, the British turned to India for the procurement of raw cotton. They also imposed an obligation on the supply of natural cotton to British industries. As raw cotton began to export, the prices increased in the international market. The weavers in India, who were already facing a supply deficit, were affected by the price rise. This reduced the Indian weavers to poverty, and British Industries gained prominence.
