Ashoka appointed Dhamma Mahamattas, who went from place to place, teaching people about dhamma. Ashoka created dhamma that did not necessitate making sacrifices or paying homage to gods. Like a parent trying to teach his children, he felt it was his duty to instruct people through these officials. The Dhamma Mahamatta officials went about teaching people about the dhamma. Ashoka also sent missionaries to Syria, Egypt, Greece, and Sri Lanka to spread the teachings of dhamma. Additionally, Ashoka had his messages carved on pillars and rocks, and he ordered his officials to read his messages to people who were unable to do so for themselves. Dhamma preached about the general norms on how to lead a peaceful life.
