Detailed Solution

Ashoka was inspired by the teachings of Buddha.
While the early part of Ashoka's reign appears to have been bloodthirsty, after his conquest of Kalinga, he became a follower of the Buddha's teachings. After his successful but devastating conquest of Kalinga early in his reign, Ashoka converted to Buddhism and was inspired by its dharma doctrine. Following that, he ruled his empire with peace and tolerance, focusing on public works and building the empire rather than expanding it. As a Buddhist emperor, Ashoka believed that Buddhism was beneficial to all humans, animals, and plants, so he constructed several stupas. He also did a good job of spreading Buddhism to neighbouring kingdoms.
