Detailed Solution

The Indian Forest Act was formulated by Brandis in 1865. The act was amended in 1878 and then in 1927. Forests were separated into three groups under the 1878 Act: reserved, protected, and village forests. As "reserved woods," the best woodlands were categorised. Even for their personal use, villagers were forbidden from taking anything from these forests. Their traditional practices like cutting wood for their use, grazing cattle, collecting fruits, hunting and fishing now became illegal. They had been using forests for their basic needs since ages. But they were ripped off their traditional rights. For house building or fuel, they were allowed to take wood from protected or village forests.
